It's the "zing" of the town's best wings. It's the rollicking sound of Irish music. It's the taste of a cold beer as the Red Sox win another one. It's meeting an old friend at the bar. It's meeting someone new on a Saturday night.
It's the St. James Irish Pub, 91 Purchase St., in downtown Fall River and the pub's new menu is turning a long time hot spot into the right now night spot.
Open since 1997 and owned by Fall River residents John Brandt and Ron Travassos, the pub's new menu uses local ingredients to create local classics.
The pub offers specials, a kids menu, take-out service, party platters and an under $5 lunch express menu that's making this the best place for a downtown lunch.
The Juicy Lucy burger is a burger stuffed with cheese, and every burger is hand-crafted. No frozen "hockey puck" burgers come out of this kitchen. The fries, regular and sweet potato, are hand cut from locally grown potatoes. The sliders are the perfect "just a quick bite" to eat while you're watching the Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics or Pats on the pub's four big screen televisions. The chicken wings are sold by the pound and have created a lot of talk in Fall River. Available au naturel or boneless, the wings are meaty and served with a variety of sauces. The Jameson Irish Whiskey Barbecue Sauce is a tribute to the bar's Irish heritage. Velvety smooth and tangy, the Jameson sauce can also be ordered with a taste of honey.
If you like the simple things, with maybe a dash of something different, try the hot-dog, smothered in melted cheese and barbecue sauce.
Like your nights hot? Try the hot wings and, if you think you like your wings nuclear, try their hottest wing sauce, guaranteed to make you gasp.
Thirsty after those fiery wings? The St. James has 12 beers on tap in an ever-changing dance of favorites and new arrivals, from flavored seasonals like blueberry and pumpkin, to Irish cider and old classics like Newcastle Brown Ale.
Try an espresso, too, maybe with just a nip of Irish whiskey or cognac on the side.
Behind the bar there are dozens of liquor bottles, including a big selection of premium flavored vodkas, a standout collection of Irish whiskey and artisan bourbons and all the other ingredients needed to make everything from a classic Manhattan to the newest hipster cocktail, served by bartenders who don't mind getting in on the sports talk at the bar.
Food, drinks, friends and entertainment all go together, so you'll enjoy the live entertainment an weekends and, for people

For over 10 years, the pub has sponsored the Irish Harvest Festival, an event to raise scholarship money in memory of Fall River Police Officer Richard Magan, who died in the line of duty.
Kitchen hours are 11:30 a.m. to midnight, every day.
